In separate incidents, at least fifteen persons including seven students were injured after army allegedly thrashed them in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Wednesday. Reports said that the soldiers of 34 RR located at Woyen allegedly caught hold of at least seven students of Sirajul Uloom Higher Secondary School Hollow, Imam Sahib. Students of class 8th and 9th were on way to their village DK Pora, however, they were stopped by the army near camp at Woyen and taken inside, they said, adding, “The soldiers later beat all of them. The students were severely injured with bruises on their body parts. They were hospitalized.” Meanwhile, people held a protest demonstration at DK Pora village against army’s “highhandedness”. It is worthy to mention here that this is the same army camp whose men fired on civilians when they hosted an Iftaar party at DK Pora in the holy month of Ramdhan. In another incident, residents of Mushwara village also accused the army of thrashing a dozen villagers and ransacking public property. “Last night, at around 11:30 pm, an army team arrived at Mushwara village and forced their entry into many houses and thrashed inmates,” locals alleged. “Due to the beating, many villagers sustained serious injuries.” The locals identified those who suffered injuries due to beating as Rayees Ahmad Shah, Gowhar Ahmad Shah, Altaf Hussain Shah, Showkat Ahmad Shah, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Parvaiz Hussain Shah, Amir Hussain and Muhammad Ayoub Shah. All the injured were taken to Shopian hospital where from four of them were later referred to SMHS Srinagar for specialized treatment, they said. Besides beating, the soldiers ransacked the public property, damaged windowpanes and parked vehicles, locals alleged. Srinagar based army spokesperson Colonial Rajesh Kalia termed all the allegations at both the places as false and baseless.
